CONSTRUCTION OF ECOLOGICAL POOLS

Before starting building a pool to relax after your workday or to enjoy with your family during the weekends, you should know that there are other types besides traditional pools.

What we know today as ecological, eco friendly or natural pools were first developed in Austria in the 1980s. The study and development of techniques that help to keep the balance and safety of the water make it possible to build them in the backyard of your house and to enjoy all their benefits.

In this article you will discover what an ecological pool is and what makes it different from a traditional pool so you can choose the best option for you

ECOLOGICAL POOLS VS TRADITIONAL POOLS

The main difference between a traditional pool and an ecological pool is the system they use to keep the water clean.

To keep the water of a traditional pool clean, chemical elements such as chloride, pumps and purifying filters are used, while the process of purification and maintenance of an ecological pool is less invasive.

Ecological pools use systems of natural purification to keep the water at a much more stable bio-ecological balance, without the need to transform it into an inert system. That is to say that from water circulation and by using a zone for purification, where different filtering substratum and aquatic plants are in charge of oxygenating and purifying water, we can keep the whole system well-balanced for a longer time.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CONSTRUCTING AN ECO-POOL?

Ecological pools have many benefits. We can find among them:

1- Clean and balanced water for a longer time: Just like a lake, river or any other natural environment, the quality of water is kept balanced at all times, letting its owners enjoy the pool any time of the year.

2- Lower maintenance: Since they are designed as a bio-ecological system, they don’t need extensive maintenance. Having the water in circulation and the plants healthy is enough for the pool to self-maintain.

3- Significant water saving: By working in a balanced way, ecological pools don’t need to be drained every year, making excessive water consumption a problem of the past.

4- No chemicals: You could open your eyes underwater without fear of eye irritation, and without worrying about dry skin or hair.

5- Variety of shapes: Allowing the easy adaptation to different backyards and gardens. 6- Introducing fish: Even though it is not everyone’s choice, ecological pools can incorporate some fish that help eliminate insects or mosquitoes larvae and maintain a better balance in the pool.

HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN AN ECOLOGICAL POOL?

The maintenance of these pools is pretty simple and it’s usually practically automatized. Thanks to their innovative design, this type of pool usually has two well-defined areas, one for purification and another for swimming.

At the purification area, biofilters and plants cleanse the water that is carried by an electric pump through pipes underneath the swimming area. By going through the purification area, the filtering substrates are in charge of keeping the microorganisms that will later feed the aquatic plants. The continuous circulation of water allows for its constant purification, resulting in water that is always clean.
